Unrequited

by Michael Duch

How like a saint's - her face!
What longing in those wondrous eyes;
That glorious angel, lost on earth
Who contemplates sad sighs!

O hath she known a love?
Is not her life too dear?
That she should suffer, lost on earth
And shed a human tear!

What beauty in her gaze!
Yet my heart's so deep and black
O will she touch my lonely soul?
Her love alone I lack!

And thus we read each other's words
Knowing well each other's hearts.
A million reasons never why -
Two fated lovers flung apart

And yet...
I wish, I wish,
I wish,
For human tenderness,
To feel the touch of silent fingertips,
To hear the softest beatific breath,
To taste the sweetest kiss from lips
That soothingly caress the velvet quietness.

But e'en though...
Like mystic angels fluttering down
Or placid souls now heavenbound
Your innocent beauty shall astound
The rarest flower.
Like passionate tears within fond hearts,
Like the cherub with a smile,
We shall linger for awhile
Never to share the silence.

I wish,
I wish,
I wish,
For some eternal bliss,
One fleeting moment caught -
A perfect snowflake thought -
Almost touched my heart,
Almost touched my heart.

Her reflection in my mind now seems
Like lovely dancers in a dream.
O slender lily! Graceful swan!
My dark-tressed goddess of the dawn!
What beauty lost when she is gone!
